2001 Renault Megane 1.4L Petrol · WJ51 WFS

The 2001 Renault Mégane has maintained a clean MOT history with no defects recorded across all five tests, most recently passing on 2025-09-08 at 27,346 miles. The absence of advisories or failures suggests the vehicle has undergone consistent, if basic, maintenance over the past five years. However, the single failure in September 2022—recorded at 25,366 miles, just two days before the subsequent pass at 25,369 miles—raises a minor red flag. This could indicate a temporary oversight in pre-test preparation rather than a recurring mechanical issue, though it warrants scrutiny of components prone to sudden failure, such as brake calipers or suspension mounts. The recorded mileage of 27,346 miles over 25 years equates to approximately 1,094 miles annually, a figure significantly lower than the average for a vehicle of this age. The gap between tests is consistent at one year, with no rapid mileage jumps or prolonged periods of inactivity. Such low mileage may imply the car has spent extended periods stationary, potentially accelerating wear on fluids, seals, and rubber components like suspension bushes and wiper blades. The lack of mileage spikes also means some high-mileage wear items—such as timing belts or exhaust systems—may still be within their original service intervals, though their condition cannot be confirmed without inspection. Given the clean MOT record, the primary focus for an in-person inspection should centre on components that often fail without warning or show gradual degradation. The suspension system, particularly the rear coil springs and bushes, should be examined for uneven wear or corrosion, as these are common failure points in older Renaults. Brake discs and calipers, despite no recorded failures, should be checked for lateral wear, binding, or uneven thickness, especially if the vehicle has been stored for prolonged periods. Structural integrity, particularly around the sills, wheel arches, and subframe, must be assessed for corrosion, as rust can compromise safety-critical elements without immediate MOT consequences. Finally, the exhaust system should be inspected for leaks or excessive rust, as these can lead to advisory failures or, in advanced cases, structural weakening. The absence of MOT defects does not guarantee these areas are sound.
