2000 Mercedes-Benz CL 500 5.0L Petrol · X874 WRG

The latest recorded MOT test from September 2018 resulted in a pass with no defects. Reviewing the historical data back to 2011, the vehicle exhibits a remarkably stable maintenance trend, with the vast majority of tests being clean passes. The few advisories noted in previous years, such as brake pad wear and minor suspension play, were typical for a vehicle of this vintage and do not suggest a pattern of neglect or systemic mechanical failure. With a recorded mileage of 125,983 miles over twenty-six years, this vehicle has averaged approximately 4,846 miles per year. This is significantly lower than the national average, suggesting the car has been used sparingly or has spent extended periods in storage. While low mileage generally implies less wear on the engine and drivetrain, it introduces specific risks associated with stagnation, such as the degradation of rubber components and the potential for fluid contamination due to a lack of regular thermal cycling. Given the low annual usage and the significant gap in MOT records since 2018, a rigorous physical inspection is essential. You must examine all tyre sidewalls for signs of perishing, cracking, or flat-spotting, as tyres often age out before the tread wears down. Check the brake discs for heavy surface corrosion and test for binding calipers, which frequently occur when a vehicle stands for long periods. The 12V battery health should be verified, and the service history must be scrutinized to ensure that oils and coolant have been changed based on time intervals rather than mileage alone, as calendar-based degradation can lead to internal sludge or corrosion. During a test drive, pay close attention to the suspension and steering. Although the 2017 advisories regarding ball joint dust covers were minor, any current tears in these boots can lead to rapid joint failure. Listen for clunks or knocks over uneven surfaces and feel for any vagueness in the steering that would indicate worn track rod ends. Additionally, verify the operation of the complex hydraulic and electronic systems typical of the CL class, ensuring there are no leaks or warning lights, as these components can seize or fail when not exercised regularly.
