2002 Volkswagen Golf 1.9L Diesel · YR02 BJU

The Volkswagen Golf’s most recent MOT test on 19 March 2026 failed, despite no recorded defects being listed—an unusual outcome that suggests either a procedural error or a test centre oversight. The preceding tests reveal a pattern of instability: the vehicle passed in January 2025 but failed again just three weeks later at nearly identical mileage (100,514 vs. 100,520), before passing again in March 2025. This inconsistency, combined with the latest failure, indicates a lack of consistent roadworthiness. The absence of any advisory notes or defects in the record implies that while the vehicle may not have failed for mechanical failings, its reliability cannot be guaranteed without further scrutiny. The recorded mileage of 119,273 miles over 24 years suggests unusually light usage, averaging just under 5,000 miles annually—a figure well below the UK average for a vehicle of this age. The most notable gap occurs between the September 2023 tests (both at 92,071 miles) and the January 2025 test (100,514 miles), a period of nearly two years with no recorded movement. This prolonged inactivity raises concerns about potential stagnation-related issues, such as degraded fluids, seized components, or corrosion from prolonged exposure. The lack of intermediate MOTs or service records during this period further complicates assessment. Given the irregular MOT history and extended periods of inactivity, a prospective buyer should prioritise an independent inspection of critical components. The suspension—particularly rear bushes and coil springs—should be examined for excessive wear or corrosion, as these are common failure points in a vehicle of this age. The braking system warrants close attention, especially rear calipers and discs, given the repeated MOT tests without failings; binding or uneven wear could have gone unnoticed. Structural integrity, including underbody corrosion around the sills, wheel arches, and exhaust system, must be thoroughly checked, as prolonged standing increases rust susceptibility. Finally, the condition of the exhaust emissions system should be verified, as older Golfs are prone to catalytic converter degradation over time.
