The 2008 Mazda MX-5 has maintained a flawless MOT record across five successive tests spanning from June 2026 back to May 2022, with every occasion resulting in a "Passed" verdict and no defects noted. This consistent pass mark indicates the vehicle remained roadworthy throughout this period, though the underlying mechanical picture is complicated by an anomalous mileage figure of 65,131 miles for a model only eighteen years old. Such a low odometer reading for a vehicle of this vintage suggests either infrequent operational use, extended intervals between drives, or potentially unreported periods of storage rather than active ownership, creating a discrepancy between the car's apparent age and its actual wear profile that warrants particular attention before purchase. When examining the vehicle's usage pattern against its age, the annual accumulation rate works out to approximately 13,026 miles per year—substantially below the typical consumption range expected for a model of this generation after eighteen years. While the absence of MOT failures does not automatically confirm pristine internal condition, the extreme mileage gap implies that many standard wear items such as suspension bushings, brake pads, and clutch components have likely seen minimal contact cycles. Conversely, this low-usage scenario may also mask the presence of latent issues that would not yet have triggered a MOT failure, particularly in areas less stressed by frequent driving such as the subframe, rubber seals, and interior components that degrade slowly regardless of mileage. For a prospective buyer, the absence of recorded defects in the MOT history provides a baseline of reliability but does not substitute for a thorough pre-purchase inspection targeting the specific areas where prolonged sitting can create hidden vulnerabilities. During a test drive, pay close attention to suspension behaviour when encountering bumps—the MX-5's short-wheelbase geometry makes it sensitive to worn control arm bushings, which may manifest as a clunky ride or uneven corner handling despite the car clearing all MOT checks. Inspect the brake discs and caliper mounts for any play or noise, as excessive heat build-up can occur even with moderate braking due to reduced running distance. Additionally, examine the chassis for surface rust around wheel arches, door sills, and the subframe, as prolonged immobility can accelerate corrosion in areas shielded from regular weather exposure, and verify that all electrical indicators function correctly, including the horn, lights, and infotainment system, since older electronics can develop intermittent faults independent of mileage.
