Common Problems with the
2003 Saab 9-3 NG

The 9-3 NG (New Generation) launched in 2003 on the GM Epsilon platform, replacing the much-loved OG model. Early cars had the most CIM (Column Integration Module) failures, causing key non-recognition and steering lock issues. The 1.9 TiD diesel was introduced later and requires strict timing belt and water pump changes every 60,000 miles.

What changed for 2003

  • All-new GM Epsilon platform
  • CIM (Column Integration Module) introduced — a common failure point
  • 1.9 TiD diesel added from 2001 in the OG but available from early NG production
  • Improved interior and safety over the OG
  • Front subframe corrosion begins to appear on UK cars

Common MOT watch-outs

  • !CIM failure — key not accepted, stability control errors
  • !Front coil springs snapping on UK roads
  • !Front subframe corrosion
  • !Rear suspension rose bush wear
