2007 Suzuki Swift 1.6L Petrol · AP57 WCD

A pattern of chronic corrosion and front suspension wear dominates the mechanical history of this 19 year old Suzuki Swift, supported by the most recent pass on 15 November 2022 which still carried three advisories and two minor defects. Across the seven recorded tests there have been two failures, both concerning front end components, with major defects recorded on the nearside front wheel bearing, offside front lower ball joint, offside front coil spring, and nearside front suspension arm ball joint. The 2018 failure was compounded by an inoperative engine management warning lamp, indicating an unresolved powertrain control issue at that time. Advisories have accumulated steadily since 2017, beginning with front brake wear and exhaust corrosion, then progressing to brake pipe corrosion on the rear axle, a corroding front crossmember, rear brake pad wear, binding rear service brakes, and most recently a corroded offside rear coil spring alongside the same persistent front strut top mounting play flagged in 2021. The cumulative record points to a vehicle with ongoing structural and chassis deterioration rather than a clean or improving trend. Mileage of 93,983 over approximately 19 years equates to an annual accumulation of around 4,946 miles, which is substantially below the typical usage rate for a vehicle of its age. Testing records span from November 2017 to November 2022, covering five consecutive years with no apparent gaps, suggesting the car has been used consistently but gently. Low annual mileage reduces wear on internal drivetrain and engine components but concentrates deterioration on items affected by age and standing periods, particularly rubber and metal components exposed to moisture. This aligns with the observed pattern of brake pipe and coil spring corrosion, suspension bush wear, and binding brake mechanisms, all of which progress through oxidation and lack of use rather than mechanical fatigue. A prospective buyer should focus the pre-purchase inspection on the front suspension geometry, given the history of failed ball joints, fractured coil spring, and worn Macpherson strut top mountings. On a test drive, listen for clonking or knocking from the front end when traversing speed humps or uneven road surfaces, and check for uneven tyre wear across the front axle which would indicate worn lower arm joints or top mount play. The offside front strut area should be examined for visible corrosion around the spring seat and top mount, as the advisories suggest progressive deterioration there. Additionally, feel for any pulling to one side under braking or uneven pedal response, which could relate to the binding rear calipers and corroding rear brake pipes previously noted. The rear axle brake lines and brake system require careful physical inspection beneath the vehicle, as corrosion covered by grease was recorded on two consecutive tests. A thorough check should look for live rust, weeping joints, and any brake pipe sections that have been poorly repaired rather than properly renewed, since concealed corrosion is a common MOT failure point and can compromise stopping performance. The front brake discs, noted as pitted in 2019 and again with rear pad wear in 2021, should be inspected for lipping and runout, with a brake test from speed confirming straight line stability and absence of judder through the steering wheel. Finally, examine the front crossmember for advanced corrosion, the exhaust system for blow or excessive rust given the 2017 advisory, and confirm the engine management lamp illuminates and extinguishes correctly during the bulb check, as its previous inoperative state is a concern if never properly rectified.
