2002 MG ZS 2.5L Petrol · CF02 UPX

The most recent DVSA MOT test for the 2002 MG ZS was conducted on 2026-09-01 and, as of this evaluation, no test has been recorded since 2021-10-05, meaning the vehicle has not undergone an MOT inspection within the past 15 months. The MOT history demonstrates a stable maintenance trend, with the only recorded failure occurring in 2019-08-29 related to the front windscreen washer providing insufficient washer liquid—a minor advisory that does not affect roadworthiness but indicates a potential need for refilling the washer fluid reservoir. The absence of further failures or advisories since 2021 suggests that the vehicle has generally maintained a clean MOT record, though the extended gap between tests warrants a thorough pre-purchase inspection to confirm ongoing compliance with current standards. The recorded mileage of 11,818 miles for a vehicle aged approximately 24 years represents an exceptionally low annual mileage of around 492 miles per year, which is far below the typical usage rate for such an older model. This low usage could imply prolonged periods of stationary storage, which often leads to accelerated wear in consumables like brake pads, tyres, and fluids, as well as potential corrosion from standing. Conversely, if the vehicle has been driven infrequently, the suspension, drivetrain, and exhaust components may have experienced less mechanical stress, though standing can still cause issues such as brake disc corrosion, binding calipers, or fluid degradation over time. The absence of higher mileage suggests that wear on critical components like the suspension bushes, coil springs, and exhaust system may not have progressed significantly, but this must be verified through a detailed inspection. Given the vehicle’s age, low mileage, and clean MOT history (with the single washer fluid advisory), the buyer should conduct a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection to address several key areas. First, examine the tyres for signs of sidewall perishing or cracking, which can weaken the rubber and reduce safety, particularly in older vehicles that may not have undergone recent tread-depth checks. Next, check the brake system for corrosion on the discs and linings, as well as any signs of binding in the calipers, which can occur when the vehicle stands for extended periods. Inspect the suspension for excessive play in the struts, bushes, or springs, listening for unusual clunking or rattling during cornering or over bumps, as these could indicate worn or failing components. Additionally, verify the battery’s health, as older vehicles with low usage may suffer from reduced charge cycles, leading to a weaker or failing 12V battery. Finally, since the vehicle has not had a recent fluid service, check the levels and condition of the engine oil, coolant, brake fluid, and differential fluid, as these fluids degrade over time even with minimal usage. If the vehicle has been stored indoors, inspect for any signs of mould or moisture damage to the interior and electrical systems. For the washer fluid advisory, ensure the reservoir is refilled with a suitable washer fluid blend to prevent future washer system malfunctions.
