2018 Volkswagen Golf 1.5L Petrol · CS13 AUG

The most recent MOT, carried out on 15 June 2026, was passed with no recorded defects, continuing an uninterrupted sequence of clean certificates dating back to the first test in July 2021. This unblemished record indicates a stable maintenance regime, with no apparent deterioration in the vehicle’s core systems over the past five years. The consistency of passing results suggests that any servicing, repairs or part replacements have been performed in a timely manner, keeping the car within the DVSA’s safety and emissions standards. At eight years old the Golf has logged only 36 511 miles, averaging just over 4 500 miles per annum. This is well below the typical UK usage of around 10 000 miles per year for a vehicle of this class, implying either predominantly short‑distance commuting, occasional use, or periods of storage. Low mileage reduces cumulative wear on consumables such as brake pads, clutch components and suspension bushings, but it can also be a sign that the car may have spent extended periods idle, which can introduce age‑related issues unrelated to distance travelled. Given the low‑mileage, time‑based checks become paramount. Inspect the tyre sidewalls for cracking, dry rot or hardening of the rubber, as ageing can cause tyre perishing even with modest tread wear. Verify that the 12‑volt battery holds a healthy charge and check for any signs of sulfation or leakage, especially if the car has been stored for long stretches. Examine the brake discs for surface rust or pitting and ensure the calipers move freely without binding; even lightly used discs can develop corrosion that leads to uneven pad wear or shudder under hard braking. Confirm that all fluid reservoirs – engine oil, coolant, brake fluid and power‑steering fluid – have been replaced at the manufacturer‑recommended intervals, as fluids degrade over time and can affect lubrication, cooling and hydraulic performance. During a test drive, listen for any clunking or squeaking from the front and rear suspension, which could indicate deteriorating bushings or worn shock absorbers despite the low mileage. Pay attention to steering feel for any play or vibration that might reveal ageing tie‑rod ends or steering rack wear. Observe the exhaust for any unusual smoke, rattles or leaks that could point to corrosion of the manifold or muffler. Finally, request to see the service book and any receipts for oil changes, timing‑belt or chain service, and confirm that the car has undergone the required 10‑year timing‑belt replacement if applicable to the engine type. These checks will help ensure that the vehicle’s age‑related condition aligns with its low‑mileage advantage.
