2002 Mercedes 2.6L Petrol · DF52 ENM

The most recent MOT test on 2026-03-05 resulted in a clean pass, maintaining a consistent pattern of compliance with roadworthiness standards over the past four years. The vehicle’s MOT history reflects a stable maintenance profile, with no recurring failures or critical defects, though the 2021 test did flag two advisories—one concerning the offside front wheel bearing showing slight play and another indicating nearside front tyre wear approaching the legal limit on the outer edge. These advisories suggest minor but persistent issues that have not progressed to failure, implying either gradual wear or occasional exposure to stress, such as rough road conditions or prolonged standing with uneven loading. The absence of subsequent failures or advisories on subsequent tests indicates either effective mitigation or the bearing and tyre wear being within acceptable operational limits for the vehicle’s age and usage. The recorded mileage of 64,156 miles for a 24-year-old Mercedes is notably low, averaging approximately 2,673 miles annually—a rate that is unusually conservative for a vehicle of this vintage. Such low mileage often reflects periods of extended idleness, particularly in older cars prone to corrosion and fluid degradation when stationary for prolonged durations. Mechanically, this usage profile could lead to specific concerns: the wheel bearing advisory from 2021 may have been exacerbated by prolonged standing, potentially causing corrosion or increased friction if not addressed promptly. Additionally, the nearside front tyre’s edge wear suggests directional stress, which could indicate misalignment, uneven load distribution, or subtle suspension issues that might worsen with time. However, the lack of further advisories or failures in the intervening years suggests these issues remain contained. As a prospective buyer, the most critical immediate checks should focus on the front wheel bearings and tyres, given their historical advisories. Inspect the offside front wheel bearing for signs of excessive play during a test drive—listen for a grinding or whining noise at low speeds or when turning sharply, and check for oil leakage around the bearing housing. The nearside front tyre’s edge wear warrants a closer look at wheel alignment and suspension geometry; uneven tyre wear patterns may indicate misalignment, bent suspension components, or binding calipers. Additionally, verify the tyre’s tread depth and sidewall condition, as the tyre’s age (approaching the legal 16mm minimum tread depth) may have contributed to the edge wear, and sidewall cracks or perishing could signal underlying structural fatigue. Beyond the advisories, given the vehicle’s age and low mileage, a comprehensive inspection should address potential issues arising from prolonged inactivity. Check the front and rear suspension for signs of corrosion, particularly around the control arms, wishbones, and struts, as standing fluids and moisture can accelerate rusting. Inspect the brake system for corrosion on discs and linings, especially on the nearside front where standing may have caused condensation and oxidation. Test the 12V battery for voltage output and overall health, as older batteries in stationary vehicles often fail due to sulphation or poor connections. Finally, verify the condition of all fluids—brake, coolant, and transmission—considering their calendar-based degradation, even if mileage is low. Ensure service records are up to date, particularly for the wheel bearing replacement and suspension components, which may have been deferred due to the vehicle’s low usage profile.
