1989 Kawasaki ZXR750H1 0.7L Petrol · F905 FWD

The latest MOT test for this vehicle was passed on 27 November 2025. When evaluating the overall maintenance trend, the history appears relatively stable, though there is a notable and recurring pattern concerning the braking system. While the vehicle has enjoyed several years of clean passes, the presence of repeated advisories regarding the front brake, culminating in the most recent advisory for fluctuation in brake effort, suggests a persistent mechanical issue that has not been fully rectified. This indicates that while the motorcycle remains roadworthy, the braking components are showing signs of age-related degradation that require close monitoring. With 41,097 miles recorded over approximately 37 years, the vehicle has been used sparingly, averaging roughly 1,111 miles per year. This represents very low mileage for a machine of this vintage. While this suggests less wear on the internal engine components and drivetrain, low-usage vehicles of this age are often subject to different mechanical risks, primarily those associated with long periods of standing. Components that rely on movement to stay lubricated or clear of debris, such as seals, bearings, and brake pistons, are more prone to seizing or perishing when not regularly exercised. The recurring advisories for front brake binding and the recent note regarding fluctuation in brake effort are the primary areas of concern. During a test ride, you should pay close attention to the front brake lever for any signs of sponginess, pulsation, or inconsistent pressure, which could indicate air in the lines, a failing master cylinder, or internal caliper corrosion. The history of binding suggests that the caliper pistons may be sticking, so inspect the front tyre for any signs of uneven or scalloped wear, which can occur if the brake is dragging. Additionally, listen for any unusual scraping or grinding noises when applying the brakes, as this could signal worn pads or excessive disc corrosion. Beyond the braking system, the low mileage and age necessitate a rigorous physical inspection of all perishable items. Check the tyre sidewalls for cracking or perishing, and inspect the fork seals for any signs of oil weeping, as dried-out rubber is common on machines that have stood for long periods. Verify the condition of the fuel lines and any other rubber hoses for signs of swelling or brittleness. Given the infrequent usage, it is vital to confirm that all fluids, including engine oil, coolant, and especially brake fluid, have been changed based on a calendar schedule rather than mileage, as fluid hygroscopy and oil degradation occur regardless of distance travelled. Finally, check the battery health and the electrical system, as long periods of inactivity can lead to sulphation and difficult starting.
