2005 Volvo XC90 2.4L Diesel · FH05 WDW

Recurring issues with tyre wear, brake disc condition, and suspension component degradation define the mechanical profile of this vehicle. The most recent test on 08 August 2024 resulted in a pass, but the record shows a persistent pattern of advisories regarding nearside front tyre wear and previous failures related to headlamp aim and parking brake efficiency. While the 2024 result cleared the immediate failure points, the history reveals a tendency for consumables and suspension bushings to reach the limits of their service life between testing intervals, suggesting a trend of wear that requires frequent monitoring. The vehicle has covered 203,285 miles over its 21-year lifespan, which equates to an average annual accumulation of approximately 9,680 miles. This usage pattern is consistent with typical long-term road use for a vehicle of this age. Mechanically, this level of mileage suggests that components subject to high friction and cyclical loading, such as the braking system, steering rack, and suspension bushings, have undergone significant operational cycles. The steady mileage accumulation supports the frequent advisories seen regarding wear on tyres and brake discs. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the suspension and steering systems during a test drive. The MOT history specifically notes advisories for worn nearside front suspension arm pins or bushes, as well as slight play in the steering rack recorded in 2022. On the road, listen for knocking or clunking noises when traversing uneven surfaces or speed bumps, which may indicate further deterioration of the bushes or anti-roll bar linkages. Additionally, any wandering sensation in the steering or a lack of precision when making small corrections could be symptomatic of the previously noted steering rack play. The braking system also warrants a thorough evaluation. With multiple advisories for pitted or scored front and rear brake discs, as well as a previous dangerous failure regarding parking brake efficiency, the effectiveness of the braking components is a priority. During a test drive, check for any pedal judder or vibration when applying the brakes at speed, which can indicate disc thickness issues or surface irregularities. Furthermore, ensure the parking brake holds the vehicle firmly on an incline to confirm that the previous efficiency failures have been fully rectified.
