2004 Volvo S40 1.8L Petrol · HS04 GHX

The vehicle currently lacks a valid MOT certificate, as the most recent test on 13 June 2024 resulted in a failure. While the record does not list specific defects for this failure, the lack of a subsequent pass suggests the car has been off the road or neglected for over a year. The maintenance trend appears unstable, marked by a pattern of failures followed by immediate retests, as seen in June 2023. The mileage is exceptionally low for a 22 year old vehicle, averaging roughly 4,712 miles per year. Between May 2022 and June 2024, the odometer climbed from 96,725 to 103,658 miles. This represents a steady but light usage pattern of approximately 3,500 miles annually over the last two years. Such low usage often indicates a vehicle used for short trips or one that has spent significant time stationary. A buyer must prioritise a physical inspection of the braking system and suspension. Vehicles that stand for long periods often suffer from binding calipers, perished rubber suspension bushes, and flat-spotted tyres. Given the age of this Volvo, structural corrosion around the sills and suspension mounting points is a primary risk, regardless of the low mileage. The absence of detailed defect notes in the MOT history is unusual and makes it difficult to track recurring mechanical issues. You should verify the service history to ensure the timing belt and water pump have been replaced according to the manufacturer's interval. Check for fluid leaks and battery health, as these are common failure points for low-mileage cars that have sat idle since mid-2024.
