2002 BMW X5 3.0L Petrol · KC02 VMO

A history of intermittent component wear and corrosion defines this vehicle's recent MOT profile, moving from a failure in 2017 to a series of advisories in more recent years. While the 2022-11-03 test resulted in a pass, the record shows a transition from mechanical failures, such as a deteriorated nearside outer front CV joint gaiter and excessive play in the offside front lower suspension arm, toward issues involving consumable wear and fluid line integrity. The most recent advisory regarding worn edges on both nearside and offside rear tyres indicates that tyre tread depth or uneven wear was approaching legal limits at the time of the last inspection. The vehicle has covered 207,375 miles over its 24-year lifespan, representing an average annual accumulation of approximately 8,641 miles. This usage pattern is consistent with typical long-term road use for a vehicle of this age. Mechanically, this level of mileage suggests that while the vehicle has not been subjected to extreme high-speed or high-frequency motorway running, the cumulative wear on drivetrain components, suspension bushings, and braking systems is significant. The steady mileage accumulation means that components subject to fatigue and friction are likely to be in various stages of their service life. Prospective buyers should pay close attention to the underside of the vehicle, specifically regarding the 2021 advisory for a corroded rear brake pipe covered in grease or other material. Such a condition can mask the true extent of structural corrosion on the braking system. During a test drive, it is essential to check for any changes in brake pedal feel, such as sponginess or a pulsing sensation, which could indicate further degradation of the hydraulic lines or binding calipers. Additionally, the previous failure of the front lower suspension arm suggests that the chassis and suspension linkages have been subject to significant stress, so any knocking or clunking sounds when navigating uneven surfaces or bumps should be investigated. The 2022 advisory regarding uneven tyre wear on the rear axle warrants a thorough inspection of the rear suspension geometry and alignment. Worn edges on tyres often point to issues with camber or toe settings, which can be caused by worn suspension bushes or damaged control arms. On the road, listen for any rhythmic thumping or humming from the rear, and check for any pulling to one side during straight-line driving. Given the age and mileage, a thorough inspection of the CV joints and all rubber gaiters is also advised to ensure no further deterioration has occurred since the 2017 failure.
