The latest MOT test from February 2023 resulted in a pass, albeit with a minor advisory regarding a slightly twisted offside rear brake hose. The maintenance history indicates a period of instability around 2021, when the vehicle failed on several major items including exhaust leaks, induction leaks, and electrical faults. However, the subsequent passes suggest that these significant mechanical and electrical issues were addressed. The current trend shows a vehicle that is being maintained to a passing standard, but the recurring mention of brake hose deterioration suggests that age-related degradation of rubber components is becoming a primary concern. The vehicle has covered 64,727 miles over approximately 33 years, which equates to an average annual usage of roughly 1,961 miles. This is exceptionally low mileage for a vehicle of this age, suggesting it has been used sparingly or has spent long periods stationary. While low mileage generally implies less wear on the engine, gearbox, and drivetrain, it introduces specific risks related to stagnation. Components that are not regularly exercised can suffer from seized calipers, dried-out seals, and the degradation of fluids, which can be just as problematic as high-mileage wear. When inspecting the vehicle, you should focus heavily on the condition of all rubber and hydraulic components. Given the history of brake hose deterioration, check all brake lines, coolant hoses, and fuel lines for any signs of perishing, cracking, or swelling. During a test drive, listen for any suspension clunks or knocks that could indicate perished bushes or worn coil springs, and pay close attention to the braking feel. Any sponginess in the pedal or uneven deceleration could indicate air in the system or binding calipers caused by corrosion from standing. You should also verify that the supplementary restraint system warning lamp is not illuminated, as this was a previous major failure point. Furthermore, because of the low annual mileage, a thorough check of the tyres is vital; look for sidewall cracking or perishing even if the tread appears deep. Check the battery health and the charging system, as older batteries often fail after periods of inactivity. It is essential to verify the service history for evidence of calendar-based maintenance, such as regular oil and coolant changes, which are critical for preventing internal corrosion in an engine that is not driven frequently. Finally, inspect the vehicle's underside for any signs of structural corrosion or exhaust system degradation that may have occurred during periods of storage.
