Symptoms on test include a clicking or rhythmic knocking noise from the front when turning at low speed, vibration through the steering wheel under load, and visible grease smearing on the lower suspension arm or inside of the wheel. If the joint has not yet contaminated significantly, a split boot can be addressed in isolation, but any delay typically necessitates full drive shaft replacement. Beyond the recorded defects, a vehicle of this age and mileage warrants standard age-related checks: tyre sidewalls should be inspected for perishing or cracking from UV exposure, the 12V battery should be load-tested given that batteries beyond six years commonly present starting difficulties, brake discs should be checked for corrosion ridges and binding calipers as the vehicle will have been parked for extended periods between MOTs, and the full service history should be verified for recent replacement of brake fluid (calendar-serviced every two years), coolant, and automatic transmission fluid.
