2005 Chrysler Grand Voyager 2.8L Diesel · MJ55 XCM

The most recent MOT test for this 2005 Chrysler Grand Voyager occurred in late 2021, marking a clean pass with no recorded defects. However, the vehicle’s MOT history reveals a pattern of recurring issues over the past several years, particularly in steering linkage integrity, rear brake system functionality, and driver’s seat mechanisms. The failures from 2018, 2019, and 2020 indicate a deterioration in suspension and braking components, with multiple instances of excessive play or binding in steering and brake systems, suggesting progressive wear or potential component failure. While the 2021 test passed, the prior failures—especially the nearside power steering ram leak and offside rear brake binding—highlight critical wear patterns that demand immediate attention. The advisory of offside front steering play and slight play in the lower steering linkage ball joint in 2019 further underscores the need for a thorough inspection of the steering system, as these issues can lead to misalignment, uneven tyre wear, or steering instability if left unaddressed. The recorded mileage of 121,829 miles for a vehicle aged approximately 21 years represents a relatively low annual usage rate of around 5,801 miles per year, which is unusually low for its age. Such low mileage can result from prolonged periods of inactivity, particularly if the vehicle has been stored in conditions prone to corrosion or fluid degradation. However, this usage profile does not necessarily mitigate the wear observed in the MOT history, as standing vehicles can accelerate issues like brake corrosion, binding calipers, and fluid contamination. The rapid accumulation of wear in steering and braking systems despite low mileage suggests either under-maintenance or environmental factors contributing to accelerated deterioration. Buyers should be cautious, as the combination of low mileage and recurring failures may indicate a vehicle that has been neglected in critical areas, leaving it vulnerable to sudden, costly failures. Given the vehicle’s history of steering and braking defects, the prospective buyer must conduct a meticulous inspection of the suspension and braking systems. During a test drive, listen for unusual clunks or rattles in the steering linkage, particularly around the offside front play in the steering rack and lower ball joints, as these may indicate further deterioration or impending failure. Check for uneven tyre wear patterns, which could signal misalignment or steering issues, and inspect the brake system for binding, excessive heat, or corrosion on the discs and pads. The nearside rear brake binding recorded in 2017 and the thin inner brake pads in 2019 suggest that the rear brakes may already be compromised, necessitating a thorough examination of brake fluid levels, hydraulic pressure, and disc thickness. Additionally, verify that the parking brake operates smoothly and does not cause excessive wear or binding when engaged. For practical checks beyond the MOT history, the buyer should examine the vehicle’s tyre condition for signs of sidewall cracking or perishing, which can weaken the tyre structure over time, even with low mileage. Inspect the 12-volt battery for signs of corrosion on terminals and a healthy charge, as prolonged standing can lead to battery failure. Check the fluid levels in the power steering, brake, and cooling systems, ensuring they are topped up and free from contamination, as fluid degradation accelerates with age. Verify that the service book or maintenance records have been updated, particularly for fluid changes and suspension component replacements, as the vehicle’s age and usage suggest time-based servicing may have been overlooked. Finally, a professional inspection of the steering and braking systems, including the replacement of worn or leaking components, is strongly recommended to mitigate the risks posed by the vehicle’s MOT history.
