2005 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · MW55 AAX

The vehicle presents a consistent history of mechanical wear issues that suggest a reactive rather than proactive maintenance approach. In the most recent test in November 2022 at 114,671 miles, the car passed only after failing for an inoperative engine management light, play in the steering rack inner joints, and thin brake pads across all axles. The steering rack inner joints are a recurring fault, dating back to at least 2018 and 2019, indicating that this component has likely never been fully replaced. The minor exhaust leak has also remained a constant presence since at least 2019, suggesting a persistent issue that the owner has not addressed. At 21 years old, the Astra has covered low mileage for its age, averaging approximately 5,400 miles per year. While low mileage often correlates with less drivetrain wear, the record shows significant degradation of rubber and suspension components. For instance, the 2020 test at 101,707 miles flagged a corroded nearside front coil spring and deteriorated anti-roll bar ball joint dust covers. The repeated failures for tyre tread depth below the legal limit in 2020 and 2022 indicate that basic consumable maintenance is frequently neglected until the vehicle fails an inspection. A buyer should be particularly concerned with the steering geometry and front suspension, given the long-term history of steering rack play and failing anti-roll bar linkages. The 2022 record also noted thin brake pads and worn tyres, which suggests the braking system is nearing the end of its service life. While no structural failures are recorded in the provided data, the presence of a corroded coil spring in 2020 warrants a thorough physical inspection for hidden rust in the chassis and subframe areas to ensure structural integrity has not degraded beyond the advisories provided.
