1996 Yamaha XVS1100 1.1L Petrol · N370 YTO

The Yamaha XVS1100 presents a clean MOT history with no recorded defects at its most recent test in September 2021, when it carried 12,520 miles. This suggests a stable mechanical condition with no immediate red flags or recurring issues over the limited available data. The absence of advisories or failures implies that basic roadworthiness—brakes, lights, steering, and emissions—has been maintained to DVSA standards at that point. However, the significant gap of over five years since the last MOT raises questions about ongoing upkeep, particularly given the bike’s age and the potential for wear in less frequently inspected areas. The XVS1100’s mileage of just 12,520 miles over 30 years indicates either very light use or prolonged periods of inactivity, averaging around 417 miles annually. While low mileage typically reduces wear on consumables like tyres, brakes, and suspension, it also means components may have degraded due to age rather than use. Rust in coastal or damp environments, dried-out seals, and degraded rubber bushes are all heightened risks when a vehicle sits unused for extended periods. The lack of recent MOT data means there’s no evidence of proactive maintenance beyond the single 2021 test, which could mask deferred issues. For a buyer, the primary focus should be on structural integrity and hidden wear. Inspect the frame for surface rust or corrosion, especially around welds, mounting points, and the swingarm pivot—common failure points on older bikes. Check the suspension components, including fork seals, rear shock bushings, and any signs of oil leakage, as these can degrade even with minimal use. The brakes should be tested for binding or uneven pad wear, and the throttle and clutch cables should move freely without fraying. Given the bike’s age, electrical systems—such as the ignition, charging, and lighting—may also require thorough testing, as wiring and switches can fail silently over time. A pre-purchase inspection by a specialist mechanic is strongly advised to verify the absence of latent issues.
