2012 Volkswagen Golf 1.4L Petrol · OV12 NFF

The most recent MOT inspection on 16 February 2026 resulted in a pass with no recorded defects, indicating that the vehicle was in a compliant state at that time. Looking at the historical trend, there was a period of recurring advisories between 2024 and 2025 concerning the nearside rear braking system and tyre condition. However, the absence of these issues in the latest test suggests that the necessary remedial work has likely been carried out, moving the maintenance trend from a period of observed wear back into a stable, compliant phase. With 88,868 miles recorded over approximately 14 years, the vehicle has averaged roughly 6,348 miles per year. This represents relatively low annual usage for a Volkswagen Golf, which typically suggests lighter mechanical strain on the drivetrain and engine compared to high-mileage examples. While this lower mileage is generally a positive attribute, it can sometimes indicate that the vehicle has been subject to short journeys or periods of standing, which can lead to specific issues such as carbon accumulation in the engine or the degradation of rubber components and fluids that are more sensitive to time than to distance travelled. Given the history of nearside rear brake binding, a thorough inspection of the rear braking assembly is essential. During your test drive, pay close attention to any unusual heat radiating from the nearside rear wheel after a period of driving, or any dragging sensations when releasing the brake pedal. You should also listen for any rhythmic scraping or grinding noises from the rear axle. It is vital to ensure that the binding issue was not just a symptom of a seized caliper piston or sticking slider pins, as these can recur if the underlying cause was not fully addressed during the previous maintenance intervals. Furthermore, the 2025 advisory regarding tyre cracking and perishing necessitates a close physical inspection of all four tyres. Even if the tread depth is sufficient, check the sidewalls for any signs of age-related perishing or fine cracks, as low-mileage vehicles often suffer from rubber degradation due to age rather than wear. Additionally, because of the low annual mileage, you must verify the service history to confirm that oil and brake fluid changes have been performed according to the manufacturer's time-based intervals rather than solely on mileage. Finally, inspect the underside for signs of surface corrosion on the exhaust system and suspension components to ensure the vehicle's structural integrity remains sound.
