The most recent MOT record from June 2022 indicates a pass, but this follows a significant failure involving multiple major defects. The vehicle's maintenance history shows a fluctuating trend rather than a consistent regime. While the 2021 and 2022 results were passes, the failures in those years were substantive, covering lighting, windscreen wipers, and critical braking components. The transition from the 2019 advisories regarding brake disc wear and anti-roll bar play to the 2022 major failure for worn rear brake discs suggests that while components were being monitored, they were allowed to reach a point of non-compliance before being addressed. This pattern indicates a reactive rather than proactive approach to maintenance, which necessitates a more rigorous physical inspection of all wear-and-tear items. With 168,500 miles recorded over approximately 19 years, the vehicle has averaged roughly 8,868 miles per year. This is considered typical for a diesel-powered SUV of this era and suggests the vehicle has been used regularly for moderate distances rather than being subjected to extreme long-distance motorway commuting or being left to sit idle for extended periods. This level of usage is generally favourable for mechanical longevity, as it reduces the likelihood of moisture buildup in the exhaust and fuel system. However, the cumulative mileage means that high-wear components such as the suspension bushes, dampers, and drivetrain seals are likely nearing the end of their service life and should be scrutinised for fatigue. Given the history of brake disc wear and the 2019 advisory regarding the offside rear anti-roll bar ball joint, a thorough inspection of the rear suspension and braking system is essential. During a test drive, listen for any rhythmic knocking or clunking sounds when driving over uneven surfaces, which would indicate worn suspension bushes or ball joints. Pay close attention to the braking performance; any shuddering through the pedal or steering wheel could indicate warped discs, while a pulling sensation to one side might suggest binding calipers. The previous history of oil leaks, though noted as not excessive in 2019, means you should inspect the engine bay and the underside of the vehicle for fresh seepage, particularly around the sump, rocker cover, or turbocharger oil feed lines. Finally, because the vehicle is nearly two decades old, you must look beyond the mechanical records to age-related degradation. Inspect the tyres for sidewall cracking or perishing, which can occur even if the tread depth is sufficient. Check the condition of all rubber hoses and belts for signs of cracking or hardening, as these are subject to time-based degradation regardless of mileage. Verify the service history to ensure that essential fluids, such as the engine oil, coolant, and brake fluid, have been changed on a calendar basis rather than just by mileage. Given the vehicle's age and the previous lighting failures, ensure all headlamp units are clear of internal condensation and that the bulbs and lenses are in good working order to avoid immediate compliance issues.
