2000 KIA Elan 1.8L Petrol · R948 BAY

A pattern of brake pipe corrosion is the defining mechanical story of this Kia Elan's MOT record, with advisories recorded in 2006 and 2009 followed by an outright failure for excessively corroded brake pipes on both sides of the rear circuit in June 2009. The vehicle has not been presented for testing since passing in November 2021 with no defects recorded, which leaves a substantial sixteen year gap since the last documented inspection on the brake and steering components that had previously been of concern. This combination of historically corrosion-prone brake lines and a long absence from the test station is a clear area for investigation, as brake pipe integrity is a safety-critical item that progresses regardless of whether the car is being driven. The most recent test in November 2021 showed a clean pass, but this only confirms roadworthiness on that single date and does not address any deterioration that may have occurred in the intervening years before the next scheduled test. The recorded mileage of 94,709 miles against an approximate vehicle age of twenty six years equates to an average annual accumulation of around 3,600 miles, which is notably low for a car of this vintage. There are two extended gaps in the testing history visible, the first between 2008 and 2021 and the second covering the present period since November 2021, both of which suggest periods of either light use or laid-up storage. Low annual mileage reduces wear on major drivetrain components such as the clutch, gearbox and engine internals, but it does not protect the vehicle from the effects of age on rubber components, brake hydraulics, fluid degradation, body corrosion and underfloor deterioration. The combination of low mileage and multi-year periods off the road makes physical inspection particularly important, as rubber seals, brake hoses and flexible components can perish through age alone even when mileage accumulation is modest. A prospective buyer should focus the pre-purchase examination on the areas historically flagged in the MOT record, beginning with a thorough visual inspection of all brake pipes along their full length, paying particular attention to the rear circuit where both sides were previously found to be excessively corroded. Corrosion on brake lines tends to develop from the inside out at joints, mounting clips and along the underside of the car where road salt and moisture accumulate, so a careful check with a torch beneath the car is warranted. The power steering system was previously noted to have slight seepage from a component, and although not a failure item this should be re-examined for fresh fluid accumulation on hoses, the rack and pump seals. The rear brake discs should be checked for pitting, and the front pads and discs measured for remaining material, as the pads were previously recorded as wearing thin and a low mileage car stored for long periods can develop brake disc surface corrosion that affects pedal feel and initial bite. On a test drive, attention should be directed towards symptoms that would indicate deterioration of the components flagged historically. Listen for any knocking or clonking from the suspension over uneven surfaces, particularly from the front strut tops and wishbone bushes, and feel for any vagueness or delay in steering response which could indicate rack wear or perished steering components. Test the brakes progressively from low speed, noting whether the pedal feels firm or spongy and whether there is any judder or pull under braking that could indicate warped or corroded discs, and check for any binding or uneven release of the calipers. Examine the underside of the vehicle for signs of weeping fluid from the power steering system, brake lines or suspension seals, and inspect all visible brake pipes for surface rust, pitting or evidence of previous repair. Given the long absence from testing, a current brake fluid analysis and inspection of all rubber brake hoses for cracking would be prudent, alongside a thorough check of the underbody and subframe mounting areas for corrosion that may have developed since the November 2021 test.
