2005 Land Rover Freelander 2.0L Diesel · RY55 ABX

Recurring structural and component degradation defines the mechanical history of this vehicle, which successfully passed its most recent MOT on 2 June 2026 despite persistent warnings regarding exhaust integrity, brake line corrosion, and tyre condition. The record shows a consistent pattern of failures followed by remedial action, particularly concerning lighting and emissions, suggesting that the vehicle requires frequent intervention to maintain its roadworthy status. The presence of repeated advisories for the same components over multiple years indicates that underlying issues, specifically regarding the rear brake lines and exhaust system, have not been fully rectified but rather managed to a minimum standard for annual testing. With a recorded mileage of 96,256 over 21 years, the vehicle averages approximately 4,584 miles per annum, a rate that is relatively low for a Land Rover Freelander of this vintage. While this limited usage might suggest less strain on the drivetrain, the MOT history reveals that the vehicle has not remained dormant, as it has been subjected to annual testing cycles. The low mileage does not exempt the vehicle from the effects of age, as evidenced by the recurring reports of rubber perishing on tyres and the deterioration of suspension components, which are often more susceptible to degradation through time and environmental exposure than through high-intensity use. Prospective buyers should prioritise a thorough inspection of the offside rear brake pipe, which has been flagged as corroded and obscured by grease or other materials since 2022. This specific advisory warrants a physical examination to determine if the corrosion is superficial or if the pipe has reached a critical thinning point that necessitates replacement. During a test drive, listen closely for any audible blowing or rattling from the rear exhaust section, as the persistent minor gas leak advisory suggests the system is nearing the end of its functional life and may require a full replacement rather than a patch repair. Further attention is required for the suspension and steering components, as the record highlights consistent play in the anti-roll bar linkages and a recent failure of a ball joint dust cover. When driving over uneven road surfaces, any knocking or clunking noises from the front end should be investigated, as these are classic symptoms of worn bushes or linkages. Additionally, the history of oil leaks, although noted as not excessive, necessitates a check of the engine bay and the underside of the vehicle for fresh fluid accumulation, as leaks can often mask more significant seal failures that may worsen as the vehicle is returned to more regular use.
