2004 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L Petrol · SD04 PYY

A 2004 Volkswagen Golf carrying this level of mileage yet showing two unrecorded fail entries back-to-back with a pass in between is a pattern worth treating with caution, particularly given that no specific defect reasons are itemised on the official log. The October 2023 test outcome was a fail, sandwiching a pass from October 2022 against a fail from August 2022, which suggests the vehicle has hovered around the pass/fail boundary rather than maintaining consistent roadworthiness. The absence of any advisory or failure detail on record means the specific reasons for refusal at the 2022 and 2023 tests are not documented, so any prospective buyer cannot rely on the MOT history alone to understand what has been rectified. A vehicle that has failed twice within roughly fourteen months at this age and mileage will almost certainly have accumulated wear on its braking, suspension and exhaust systems that warrants close physical inspection. With 213,783 miles recorded over twenty-two years, the annual accumulation sits at roughly 9,717 miles per year, which is broadly in line with average usage for a car of this vintage. However, the presence of a fail at 2022-08-31 followed shortly by a pass at 2022-10-05 implies either a quick repair cycle or a retest following rectification, and the intervening twelve months before the next fail in October 2023 indicates that whatever was addressed at the 2022 retest did not provide lasting resolution, or new defects developed in the meantime. At this mileage, internal engine wear, clutch drag, dual-mass flywheel degradation, and turbocharger oil seal hardening (on TDI derivatives common to this generation) are all realistic expectations. A compression or leak-down test would be prudent, along with a manual inspection of injector seepage and timing belt confirmation, particularly if the timing belt service history cannot be evidenced by paperwork rather than assumption. For a test drive, attention should be paid to any clonking or knocking from the front suspension over uneven surfaces, as the Mk4 and early Mk5 Golf front subframe, lower wishbones, anti-roll bar drop links and rear axle bushes are known to deteriorate progressively with mileage and often manifest as imprecise steering or wandering at speed. Brake pedal feel should be assessed for sponginess or excessive travel, which can indicate perished flexible brake hoses or air ingress in the hydraulic system, while any pulling to one side under consistent braking would point toward a binding or seized caliper. Listen for any exhaust blowing or ticking under acceleration, particularly from the manifold gasket area or downpipe joint, as heat-cycling at this age typically cracks gaskets and warps flanges. On the engine side, cold-start behaviour should be observed for excessive smoke from the oil-filler cap area or any smell of coolant, which on higher-mileage Golf units can indicate head gasket porosity or water pump weepage. Before purchase, an independent pre-purchase inspection using a two-post ramp is strongly recommended, as MOT test records alone provide insufficient visibility into the structural and mechanical condition of a vehicle of this age and mileage. The inspection should specifically check the underside for corrosion on the rear axle beam mounting points, handbrake mechanism operation, and any evidence of fluid staining around the gearbox and engine sump. Tyres should be examined for uneven shoulder wear, which often reveals tracking or suspension geometry issues not visible on a road test. Given the alternating pass and fail pattern, the buyer should budget for the likelihood of immediate remedial work on brakes, suspension bushes or exhaust components, and should treat the lack of recorded advisory detail as a reason for heightened scrutiny rather than reassurance.
