2002 BMW 3 Series 2.2L Petrol · SF02 SBF

A remarkably clean DVSA history defines this 2002 BMW 3 Series, with the most recent test on 22 September 2025 returning a pass and no advisories logged whatsoever. Across five recorded tests spanning 2022 through 2025, the vehicle has consistently achieved pass results with zero defects recorded, including a pass on 14 September 2023 and again on 19 September 2022. The single failed entry on 16 September 2024 carries no recorded defect details and was followed immediately by a pass on the same date, suggesting a minor or retest situation that was resolved without any item being formally logged by the examiner. This pattern indicates a vehicle that has consistently met DVSA roadworthiness standards over the inspection period, with no recurrence of any flagged components or developing issues documented in the official record. The recorded mileage of 79,037 miles across approximately 24 years equates to an average annual accumulation of around 3,293 miles, which is notably low for a car of this vintage. Such restrained usage typically means reduced wear on major drivetrain components including the engine, gearbox, and clutch, while brake discs, pads, and tyres may have been replaced less frequently simply due to limited mileage accumulation. However, low-mileage vehicles of this age carry their own mechanical considerations, particularly around ageing rubber components, seals, and gaskets that can deteriorate through age rather than use. Despite the low annual figure, there are no extended gaps in the testing history that would suggest long-term storage or the vehicle being off the road, which is a positive indicator of consistent use. Given the absence of any recorded advisories or defects across the documented test history, a prospective buyer cannot rely on the MOT record to highlight specific components requiring attention. The test drive and physical inspection should therefore focus on the areas where age-related wear typically manifests on a 24-year-old BMW 3 Series, including the rear subframe mounting points and trailing arm bushes which are known corrosion concerns on this generation. Listen for clonking or knocking noises from the rear suspension over uneven surfaces, which would indicate deteriorated bush compliance, and check for any steering wander or uneven tyre wear that might suggest worn front control arm or wishbone bushes. Inspect the underside thoroughly for any surface corrosion on the floor pans, suspension arms, and brake pipe runs, paying particular attention to the fuel lines and rear axle area. Brake feel should be assessed for any pulling to one side under steady pressure, which would suggest a binding caliper, and the pedal should feel firm without excessive travel that might indicate worn rear drum adjusters or a master cylinder issue. On the road, monitor for any blue smoke from the exhaust on startup, which is a common age-related concern with valve stem oil seals on higher-mileage BMW engines, and listen for timing chain rattle on cold start which is a known weakness on this era of M52 and M54 engines. With no MOT history to guide component focus, a pre-purchase inspection by a specialist familiar with the E46 chassis is strongly advisable to assess the state of cooling system components, suspension bushes, subframe integrity, and the condition of the rear trailing arm mounting pockets, all of which are known wear items that simply have not surfaced in the test record.
