2011 Volkswagen Golf 2.0L Diesel · SL61 AJX

A recurring theme of progressive suspension wear and brake‑related advisories defines this Golf’s recent MOT record. The 2026‑05‑19 test was a pass, yet it recorded a corroded front brake hose, light oil mist from the off‑side rear shock absorber, rear sub‑frame corrosion and tyre wear close to the legal limit. Similar rear‑shock oil mistings and anti‑roll‑bar linkage play have been noted in every test since 2022, and a single failure in 2022 highlighted an excessively fluctuating front service brake and an overly worn front anti‑roll‑bar ball joint. The pattern shows a vehicle that consistently meets the minimum legal standards but carries a backlog of wear items that have not been rectified. At 224,078 mi the car averages roughly 14,900 mi per year, well above the typical UK average for a fifteen‑year‑old family hatchback. The mileage accumulation is steady rather than spiking, indicating regular use rather than long periods of storage. Such high kilometre figures accelerate wear on consumables – tyre tread, brake pads and discs, suspension bushings and shock absorbers – and amplify the impact of any corrosion already noted on the sub‑frame and brake hose. No significant gaps appear in the MOT chronology, suggesting the vehicle has been driven continuously throughout its life. When inspecting, pay particular attention to the rear shock absorbers for any external oil seepage and listen for a soft “squish” or metallic clunk when the car traverses bumps, which would confirm internal leakage or worn damper internals. The anti‑roll‑bar linkage pins and ball joints should be examined for excessive play; a firm “click” when the rear wheels are rocked can reveal the slight wear already flagged as an advisory. The front brake hose corrosion near the ferrule should be inspected for any cracking or moisture ingress, and the pedal should be tested for smooth, consistent pressure without the pulsation that caused the 2022 failure. The rear sub‑frame should be probed for surface rust that could progress to structural weakening, especially around mounting points. Tyre condition warrants a thorough visual check: all four tyres were reported as close to the legal limit and worn on the edges, so tread depth should be measured and any side‑wall damage noted. The off‑side rear registration‑lamp failure recorded in 2023 should be verified as operational, and the repeated windscreen chips should be inspected for any propagation that could affect visibility. Given the cumulative advisories, a prospective buyer should budget for replacement of the rear shocks, anti‑roll‑bar linkage components and possibly the front brake hose, while confirming that the sub‑frame corrosion has not progressed beyond the surface level noted in the latest MOT.
