2016 Volkswagen Golf GTD 2.0L Heavy oil · ST66 WCD

A pattern of recurring brake and tyre advisories defines the roadworthiness record of this 2016 Volkswagen Golf, with every MOT test from 2020 onwards flagging components at or approaching service limits. The most recent test on 16 December 2025 recorded a clean pass with no advisories, which suggests that the brake and tyre issues identified in earlier years may have been addressed in the interim. Despite that recent result, the five-year run of advisories points to consistent wear on consumable items, particularly front brake discs in 2024 and rear brake discs and pads in 2022, alongside repeated front tyre edge wear noted in 2020 and 2023. The advisory for nearside front shock absorber oil misting in 2021 adds a suspension element to the picture, though it was not flagged again in subsequent tests. With seven MOT tests recorded between 2019 and late 2025 and a current odometer reading of 83,193 miles, this Golf has covered roughly 8,300 miles annually across its ten-year life, which sits comfortably within typical usage expectations for the model. There are no extended gaps in the testing history, and the mileage progression between annual tests appears broadly consistent, suggesting the vehicle has been in regular use rather than left standing for prolonged periods. That continuous usage pattern is mechanically significant, as it reduces the risk of dried seals, seized calipers, and flat-spotted tyres that can afflict low-mileage or intermittently used cars, but it does mean the wear patterns already documented in the advisories are likely to continue accumulating at a steady rate. For a prospective buyer, the brake-related advisories warrant close physical inspection before purchase. The 2022 record shows both rear discs pitted or scored and rear pads wearing thin, while the 2024 test noted similar wear on the front inner brake disc, indicating that disc and pad replacement has probably occurred at least once across the recorded period. On a test drive, listen for any grinding or scraping from the brakes, particularly under moderate pedal pressure, and feel for judder through the steering wheel or brake pedal that would suggest residual disc run-out or uneven pad transfer. Check the condition of the visible portions of the brake pipes and flexible hoses for any surface corrosion or cracking, and confirm the handbrake holds firmly on an incline without excessive lever travel. The suspension advisory for light oil misting on the nearside front shock absorber in 2021, combined with the repeated front tyre edge wear in 2020 and 2023, suggests attention should be paid to the front suspension geometry and damper condition. On a test drive, listen for any knocking or clonking from the front end over speed humps, uneven road joins, or pothole strikes, which could indicate worn suspension arms, drop links, or anti-roll bar bushes rather than the shock absorbers themselves. The steering should feel precise without vibration or pulling to one side under braking, as uneven tyre wear can also be a symptom of alignment issues, worn wishbone bushes, or tracking misalignment. Finally, inspect all four tyres for uneven shoulder wear, confirm the sidewalls are free of cracking or bulging, and verify that the tread depth is comfortably above the legal 1.6mm minimum across the full width of each tyre.
