2002 Audi A4 1.9L Diesel · VE02 LBA

The 2002 AUDI A4 presents a mixed mechanical picture shaped primarily by two recurring front suspension concerns that surfaced in the 2022 MOT and were not present in the July 2023 test. The 2022 inspection recorded slight play in both the offside and nearside front suspension arm ball joints under advisory 5.3.4 (a) (i), alongside a taped front wing requiring attention. Despite these flags, the vehicle successfully passed its most recent MOT on 2023-06-20 with no new defects noted, indicating that either the underlying issues were addressed or the suspension assembly showed sufficient durability to clear the test despite the prior warnings. The trajectory of the record therefore reads as stable following initial concerns, though the persistence of the front suspension advisory warrants close scrutiny before committing to purchase. With 148,675 miles recorded on a 24-year-old chassis, the annual accumulation of approximately 6,195 miles places this vehicle within the expected usage envelope for its age, though the mileage profile does reveal a significant gap between the 2022-06-23 test and the 2023-06-20 pass, spanning nearly nine months. This extended interval between MOTs suggests reduced driving activity or prolonged periods of storage, which typically moderates the rate of consumable wear across the drivetrain and suspension systems. When evaluating the mechanical impact of such a gap, one must consider that the front suspension bearings and ball joints experience cyclic loading primarily through braking and cornering forces rather than direct mileage, meaning the lower average annual mileage may actually mask accelerated wear on these specific components if the car was occasionally driven hard. Focusing on the documented advisories, the front suspension ball joints require particular attention during a test drive. Look for visible or audible knocking over bumps, especially when approaching corners at moderate speed, as slight play in the ball joints can manifest as a rhythmic clunking noise or an uneven ride quality. Additionally, check for any abnormal pedal response—delayed or spongy throttle feedback through the chassis—that could indicate worn bushings or compromised control arm pivots. The front wing tape issue, while not a critical safety failure itself, should be verified visually for any peeling or cracking that might compromise aerodynamic efficiency or, in some designs, allow fluid or debris infiltration into adjacent components. Beyond the suspension, the absence of other advices or failures up to the 2023 MOT suggests that the rear suspension, drivetrain, and primary powertrain elements remained within acceptable limits throughout the vehicle's operational life. Nevertheless, given the persistent front suspension advisory, a pre-purchase inspection should include a detailed examination of the front suspension arm bushings, ball joints, and tie rod ends for signs of metal-on-metal contact, excessive play, or rust penetration. Verify that the front wheel alignment is properly set and that there are no signs of subframe corrosion around the suspension mounting points, as rust can exacerbate bearing wear and create additional instability. While the car cleared the November 2023 MOT, these specific findings should prompt the buyer to address the front suspension concerns professionally before taking ownership, as unresolved play in the ball joints can progressively degrade the entire suspension geometry over time.
