2003 Nissan X-Trail 2.2L Diesel · VO03 WTU

Structural corrosion and recurring component degradation define the mechanical profile of this vehicle, with the most recent MOT passed on 08 July 2026 showing an increasing number of advisories. While the vehicle has successfully passed its last few tests, the record shows a pattern of deteriorating rubber components and advancing corrosion. Specifically, the rear subframe was noted as corroded in the 2026 test, and there is a recurring issue with the nearside front drive shaft joint constant velocity boot, which was flagged as a minor defect in both 2025 and 2026. The presence of multiple advisories regarding suspension, braking systems, and lighting suggests a vehicle where wear and environmental degradation are becoming more frequent. The recorded mileage of 89,446 miles over a 23-year period represents a low annual average of approximately 3,889 miles. This usage pattern indicates the vehicle has spent significant time stationary or has been used for very short journeys, which can lead to specific mechanical issues. In this case, the MOT history reflects this through advisories for perishing tyres and pitted brake discs, which are common when a vehicle is not driven frequently enough to prevent rubber degradation or to keep braking surfaces clear of surface oxidation. The low mileage does not preclude the need for thorough inspection of rubberised components and seals that may have hardened due to age rather than distance travelled. A physical inspection should focus heavily on the chassis and braking infrastructure. The advisory regarding a corroded rear subframe requires close scrutiny to determine if the oxidation is merely superficial or if it threatens the structural integrity of the mounting points. Furthermore, the history of corroded brake pipes and hoses, noted in 2022, 2023, and 2024, means the integrity of the entire hydraulic system should be verified. During a test drive, pay close attention to the brake pedal feel; any sponginess or a pulsating sensation could indicate issues with the lines or the previously noted ABS fault from 2025. The suspension and drivetrain also require careful evaluation. The recent advisory for play in the nearside front suspension arm ball joint, combined with previous notes on worn bushes, suggests potential movement in the steering geometry. Listen for knocking or clunking noises when driving over uneven surfaces or during low-speed manoeuvres, as these are typical symptoms of worn ball joints or suspension bushings. Additionally, the repeated deterioration of the nearside front CV boot means the drive shaft joint itself should be checked for excessive play or clicking sounds when turning the steering wheel to full lock, which would indicate that grease has escaped and the joint has been compromised.
