2002 Harley-Davidson XL1200S 1.2L Petrol · WU02 TWP

The most recent MOT inspection conducted on 25 July 2026 resulted in a pass with no recorded defects. When evaluating the overall maintenance trend, the vehicle shows a positive trajectory. Although the 2017 and 2018 inspections flagged advisories regarding tyre wear and perishing, the subsequent years have shown a clean record. This suggests that the previous issues were rectified and that the motorcycle has been maintained sufficiently to meet current roadworthiness standards without recurring structural or mechanical failures. The recorded mileage of 6,088 miles is remarkably low for a 24-year-old vehicle, representing an annual usage rate of roughly 254 miles. While this low mileage implies minimal wear on the engine, transmission, and braking hardware, it also indicates that the motorcycle has likely spent extended periods in storage. From a mechanical perspective, low-usage vehicles are prone to different types of degradation than high-mileage ones. The lack of regular operation can lead to the hardening of rubber seals, the stagnation of fluids, and the development of corrosion in areas that are typically kept clean by regular movement and airflow. Given the age and low usage profile, a prospective buyer should conduct a rigorous physical inspection focusing on age-related deterioration. Closely examine the tyres for any signs of sidewall cracking or perishing, as rubber compounds lose their elasticity over time regardless of the remaining tread depth. Inspect the fuel system and tank for any signs of internal corrosion or fuel varnish, which can occur when petrol sits stagnant for months or years. It is also vital to check the condition of the battery and the charging system, as long periods of inactivity can lead to deep discharge and permanent capacity loss. During a test ride, pay close attention to the responsiveness of the braking system and the smoothness of the engine. Look for any signs of weeping from the front fork seals or engine gaskets, which can indicate that seals have dried out due to lack of use. Check the brake discs for heavy surface corrosion or pitting, and ensure the calipers are not binding due to seized pistons from lack of regular movement. Finally, verify the service history to ensure that fluids such as engine oil and brake fluid have been changed according to calendar-based intervals rather than solely on mileage, as brake fluid is hygroscopic and can cause internal component damage if not replaced regularly.
