2014 Toyota Avensis Icon D-4D 2.0L Heavy oil · FH64 CVK

This Toyota Avensis presents a mixed but generally stable roadworthiness profile across its recorded MOT history, with the most recent test on 24 May 2026 returning a clean pass and no advisories or defects recorded. Across the eight tests documented since December 2020, the vehicle has accumulated two failures and four advisories, suggesting that while the car has consistently met the minimum legal standard, certain wear items have surfaced as recurring or borderline concerns. The two failures both involved relatively minor component issues — a non-functioning offside front position lamp in late 2021 and front wiper effectiveness plus a deteriorated dust cover on the offside front anti-roll bar linkage ball joint in late 2020 — neither of which points to any systemic structural or mechanical deterioration. The advisory items relate primarily to brake disc condition on both rear corners and play in the offside front anti-roll bar linkage ball joint, indicating that suspension and braking components have been the principal areas of wear flagged during inspection. With 91,123 miles recorded over roughly twelve years of life, this Avensis is accumulating mileage at approximately 7,594 miles per year, which sits broadly within typical parameters for a diesel or petrol family saloon of this vintage. There are no significant gaps in the annual testing record between 2020 and 2026, and no evidence of a prolonged period off the road that might raise concerns about dormant component degradation such as seized brakes, perished hoses, or severe fluid contamination. The mileage progression between consecutive MOTs appears consistent with regular use rather than sporadic or long-distance-only driving, meaning that consumable wear across tyres, brake pads and discs, and suspension bushes should reflect steady accumulation rather than shock loading from infrequent heavy use. For a prospective buyer, the offside front anti-roll bar linkage ball joint flagged in both December 2020 (with a dust cover failure allowing dirt ingress) and December 2024 (with slight play) deserves particular attention on a test drive. Listen for any clunk or rattle from the front suspension when traversing speed bumps or potholes, and feel for vagueness or knocking through the steering wheel over uneven surfaces, as the linkage ball joint directly influences steering precision and front-end stability. Given that the 2024 advisory recorded only slight play at that point, a physical check of the joint for any further deterioration or perished boot is advisable, alongside a visual inspection of the corresponding nearside linkage which was not flagged but would typically experience similar wear rates. The rear brake disc advisories from December 2021 — noted as worn, pitted or scored but not seriously weakened on both sides — should also inform the pre-purchase inspection. On a test drive, listen for any grinding, squealing, or pulsation through the brake pedal, particularly under firm application from higher speeds, as pitted rear discs can cause judder and may now require replacement given the five-year interval since that observation. Inspect the discs visually for an obvious lip on the outer edge or visible scoring, and check that the handbrake holds firmly on an incline, since rear disc wear on Avensis models of this era is a known consumable issue. Beyond these specific flagged items, a general check for any fluid leaks, uneven tyre wear, and the operation of all exterior lighting including the offside front position lamp previously affected would complete a sensible assessment.
