2016 Volkswagen Sharan 2.0L Diesel · GD16 VVG

The most recent MOT test for this 2016 Volkswagen Sharan was conducted on 2026-07-24 and resulted in a clean pass, with no recorded defects. The vehicle’s MOT history over the past seven years demonstrates a remarkably stable maintenance profile, featuring consistent passes with only one advisory noted in 2020—front brake pads wearing thin. This single advisory, however, does not indicate a deterioration trend; rather, it reflects a routine wear condition that is common in high-mileage vehicles and typically managed through scheduled servicing. The absence of repeated failures or advisories over the preceding six years suggests that the vehicle has been maintained within acceptable standards, though the owner should remain vigilant regarding the brake system, particularly the pads and discs, as thin pads may necessitate replacement before they reach the critical wear limit. The recorded mileage of 58,573 miles for a ten-year-old vehicle represents an unusually low annual usage rate of approximately 5,857 miles per year. Such a low mileage profile is atypical for a vehicle of this age and typically suggests either infrequent operation or prolonged periods of inactivity. This could lead to several potential issues, particularly in the brake system, suspension, and drivetrain components, which may suffer from standing corrosion or fluid degradation due to lack of use. For example, standing brake calipers can bind, leading to uneven wear on discs or even seizure if left unresolved. Similarly, suspension bushes and coil springs may stiffen or degrade over time when not subjected to regular movement, while the 12-volt battery could lose charge, requiring a deeper inspection for capacity and terminal corrosion. Additionally, fluids like brake fluid and differential oil can degrade over long periods of disuse, compromising their effectiveness. Given the clean MOT history and low mileage, the prospective buyer should conduct a thorough physical inspection to address potential age-related and standing-use vulnerabilities. First, examine the tyres closely for signs of sidewall perishing, cracking, or dry rot, which can become critical if the vehicle is not driven regularly. Check the tyre tread depth and ensure there are no lateral cracks or blistering, as these can indicate underlying structural weaknesses. Next, inspect the brake system for any signs of corrosion on the discs or calipers, particularly around the brake lines and mounting points, as standing can accelerate rust formation. Listen for any unusual noises during a test drive, such as grinding when braking or clunking from suspension components, which may signal binding or worn suspension elements. Additionally, verify the condition of the 12-volt battery by checking for corrosion on terminals and ensuring it holds a charge when static. Since the vehicle has not been driven frequently, it is advisable to confirm that the service book or maintenance records have been updated for time-based servicing, such as fluid replacements for the brake fluid, coolant, and differential oil, which should ideally have been conducted within the last 12 months. The 2020 advisory regarding thin front brake pads is the only mechanical concern to date, but it should not deter a purchase if the buyer is prepared to address it promptly. During a test drive, pay close attention to the braking performance, particularly at lower speeds, where thin pads may exhibit reduced stopping power or a spongy pedal feel. If the pads are indeed near the critical wear limit, they should be replaced before they wear down to the minimum legal thickness, which is 1.5mm. If the vehicle has been in storage for extended periods, consider a more comprehensive inspection of the drivetrain, exhaust system, and electrical components, as prolonged disuse can accelerate wear in these areas. Ultimately, the vehicle’s roadworthiness is strong, but its low mileage and potential standing-use issues necessitate proactive maintenance to ensure long-term reliability.
