2011 Vauxhall Astra 1.6L Petrol · HJ11 HWR

Recurring advisories regarding oil leaks and brake disc degradation define the mechanical profile of this Vauxhall Astra, with the most recent test on 16 February 2026 showing a continuation of these issues alongside new concerns regarding tyre perishing. While the vehicle passed its latest inspection, there is a persistent trend of non-critical oil seepage and surface deterioration of the rear brake discs that has been noted in multiple consecutive tests since at least early 2025. The presence of a major failure in January 2025 involving excessive play in the offside front wheel bearing indicates that while the vehicle remains roadworthy, specific mechanical components have required attention to meet safety standards. The recorded mileage of 67,481 miles over a fifteen-year period represents a low annual average of approximately 4,500 miles. This usage pattern often correlates with the specific defects observed in the MOT history, such as the cracking and perishing of tyres and the pitting of brake discs, which can occur when a vehicle is subjected to infrequent use or long periods of inactivity. Mechanically, such low mileage does not preclude the need for component replacement, as rubber elements like tyre sidewalls and fuel cap seals can degrade due to age and environmental exposure rather than tread wear, and brake surfaces can corrode when not regularly scrubbed by heavy braking cycles. A prospective buyer should pay close attention to the ongoing oil leak advisories, which have been flagged repeatedly since 2024. During a test drive, it is necessary to observe the engine bay for signs of active dripping and to check the ground beneath the vehicle after it has been stationary to determine the scale of the seepage. Furthermore, the repeated advisories for pitted or scored rear brake discs suggest that the braking surfaces are not maintaining a smooth finish. On the road, listen for any rhythmic clicking or humming from the wheel areas, which could indicate that the previously failed wheel bearing has been addressed or that other hub components are developing play, and feel for any pulsation through the brake pedal when applying pressure. Suspension and tyre integrity also require physical inspection. The history shows a recurring advisory for corroded rear coil springs dating back to 2021, so the structural condition of these springs should be checked for significant scale or fractures. Additionally, the most recent advisory regarding damaged or perishing tyres on both rear wheels suggests that the rubber may be reaching the end of its serviceable life due to age-related cracking. During the test drive, pay attention to any irregular vibrations or thumping noises over bumps, which could stem from worn suspension bushes or the condition of the tyres and springs.
