2011 BMW 116 2.0L Diesel · LC60 VFY

The most recent MOT on 5 May 2026 was passed, with only a minor windscreen chip noted and an advisory concerning a rear nail in the tyre. Over the last five years the vehicle has shown a generally clean record, with only the 2024 test flagging rear‑tyre cracking and the current test highlighting a potential puncture. This pattern suggests a stable maintenance history overall, but the tyre condition is beginning to deteriorate and warrants attention before it becomes a safety issue. At 59,923 miles for a 2011 model the annualised mileage works out at roughly 4,000 mi per year, which is well below the typical UK average for a car of this age. Such low utilisation often points to periods of limited use or extended storage rather than heavy wear. While low mileage reduces the cumulative stress on engine, transmission and suspension components, it can also mean that parts such as rubber, seals and batteries have aged without the benefit of regular operation, increasing the risk of perishing, corrosion or fluid breakdown. Prospective buyers should give the rear tyres the highest priority. Inspect both sidewalls for any cracking, dry rot or bulging and measure tread depth; the advisories indicate they are approaching the legal limit and may already be perishing, so replacement is likely imminent. Verify that the nail‑related advisory has been remedied – a slow leak can cause uneven wear, vibration or a sudden loss of pressure. While on the road, listen for thumping or a pulsating feel from the rear wheels, especially under braking, which would suggest tyre damage or a developing puncture. Also check the condition of the suspension bushes and shock absorbers, as age‑related hardening can lead to clunking over bumps if the tyres are compromised. Beyond the tyres, conduct a thorough age‑related inspection. Examine the chassis and wheel arches for rust, particularly in any areas that may have been exposed during periods of standing. Test the 12 V battery voltage and, if possible, its cranking performance; a battery that has sat idle for long stretches often requires replacement. Inspect all fluid reservoirs – engine oil, brake fluid, coolant and power‑steering fluid – for colour, level and any signs of contamination, and be prepared to have them flushed if they appear dark or milky, as calendar ageing degrades their protective properties. Finally, confirm that the service book contains regular oil changes and any scheduled maintenance; a well‑documented service history will give added confidence that the low‑mileage vehicle has been looked after despite its limited use.
