2012 Land Rover Freelander 2.2L Diesel · OV12 YKB

The vehicle was presented for its most recent DVSA roadworthiness examination on 23 September 2025 and was recorded as a PASS, with no advisories or defects entered against the test. Reviewing the broader MOT history, the Freelander has consistently passed its annual tests since 2018, demonstrating a stable and compliant maintenance trend overall. The advisories recorded in 2020, 2022, and 2024 are minor in nature, principally relating to oil seepage and front tyre wear, none of which escalated into failure items at the subsequent test. The absence of any structural, braking, suspension, or exhaust advisories over the four most recent tests is a positive indicator, suggesting that the major mechanical and safety systems have remained within acceptable condition. With 105,142 miles accumulated over approximately fourteen years, the vehicle has averaged around 7,500 miles per annum, which is broadly typical for a car of this age. This level of usage is sufficient to keep mechanical components, seals, and lubricants functioning as intended, reducing the likelihood of the corrosion, fluid degradation, and seized components often associated with low-mileage or sporadically used vehicles. The mileage progression between MOTs appears steady, with no evidence of an MOT odometer discrepancy or clocked reading, and no anomalous gaps that would suggest prolonged periods of standing. For a 2012 Freelander, this represents a healthy working mileage rather than an excessively worn high-mileage example. Given the recurring oil leak advisories noted in 2020, 2022, and 2024, prospective buyers should pay particular attention to the engine and surrounding components. On a pre-purchase inspection, request that the vehicle be examined on a clean bay or under good lighting to identify the source of the oil weep, which on the Freelander 2 is commonly traced to the rocker cover gasket, the front crankshaft seal, or the turbo oil feed lines on the diesel variants. Listen at idle for any timing chain rattle from cold, and observe the exhaust for blue smoke on start-up or under load, which would indicate oil consumption beyond a simple gasket seep. The 2024 advisory specifically noted the leak was not excessive, suggesting an ongoing minor seep rather than a major failure, but it is worth budgeting for remediation. The advisory history for front tyres wearing on both the nearside and offside edges in 2020, and on the offside edge again in 2024, suggests a recurring tracking or suspension geometry issue. On a test drive, listen for any clonking or knocking from the front suspension over speed humps and uneven surfaces, which would indicate worn anti-roll bar bushes, drop links, or front suspension arms, all common on the Freelander at this mileage. Uneven inner or outer tyre edge wear should prompt a four-wheel alignment check. Additionally, while the recent MOT record is clean, it remains prudent to inspect the rear brake calipers for binding due to standing corrosion, examine the tyres for age-related sidewall perishing regardless of tread depth, verify the 12V battery health given the vehicle's age, and confirm that the timing belt, diesel particulate filter, and brake fluid have been serviced in line with manufacturer schedules. A clear service history with documented cambelt replacement and recent fluid changes would substantially strengthen buyer confidence in this otherwise well-maintained example.
