2020 Volkswagen ID3 Life Electric · OV70 VAM

The 2020 Volkswagen ID3 Life has achieved a clean MOT history over the past three years, with all tests conducted between late 2023 and late 2025 resulting in a passing grade with no recorded defects or advisories. This consistent performance suggests a stable maintenance regime, though the absence of defects does not preclude latent issues that may only surface under stress or through thorough inspection. The vehicle’s adherence to regulatory standards implies that fundamental roadworthiness—such as operational braking, steering, lighting, and emissions compliance—remains intact, though the lack of advisories or minor failures does not guarantee long-term reliability without further scrutiny. The recorded mileage of 29,837 miles for a vehicle aged six years represents a relatively low annual usage rate of approximately 4,973 miles per annum. Such a pace is unusual for a modern electric vehicle, which often accumulates far greater mileage over comparable periods, particularly if driven in urban or mixed traffic where regenerative braking and lower power demands might otherwise reduce wear. The low mileage could indicate prolonged periods of inactivity, particularly if the car has been stored in a garage or used sparingly for commuting or leisure. However, low mileage alone does not guarantee pristine mechanical condition, as components like suspension bushes, seals, and brake systems can degrade from prolonged static loading or environmental exposure, even without significant driving. The absence of rapid mileage accumulation suggests no acute wear patterns from aggressive use, but the vehicle’s age and potential exposure to damp or corrosive conditions warrant careful attention to standing corrosion and fluid degradation. For a prospective buyer, the ID3 Life’s age and low mileage profile necessitate a comprehensive physical inspection beyond the MOT record. Begin with an examination of the tyres, focusing on sidewall condition for signs of cracking, perishing, or dry rot, which can compromise structural integrity and safety, especially in older electric vehicles where rubber compounds may degrade more rapidly. Inspect the battery system for any visible swelling, leaks, or corrosion around terminals, as electric vehicles are particularly susceptible to battery degradation from both age and prolonged disuse. Check the 12-volt battery and associated electrical systems for signs of corrosion on connectors or a declining cold-cranking amp rating, which could affect starter performance and accessory reliability. Additionally, verify the condition of the suspension and steering components, paying particular attention to the presence of rust or corrosion on the subframe, wishbones, and control arms, which are common areas for standing corrosion in low-mileage vehicles. Listen for unusual noises during a test drive, such as clunks or rattles from the suspension, which may indicate worn suspension bushes or damaged coil springs. Test the braking system for binding calipers, uneven wear on discs or pads, or a shuddering sensation that could signal warping or contamination. Inspect the exhaust system for leaks, corrosion, or structural integrity, and check for any fluid leaks under the vehicle, particularly around the front and rear axles, as well as the battery and electrical connections. Finally, given the vehicle’s age, consider scheduling a professional inspection of the electrical system, including the inverter, power steering pump, and cooling system, to ensure all time-sensitive fluids—such as brake fluid, coolant, and transmission fluid—are within recommended service intervals, even if the MOT has not flagged them. A thorough check of the service book for any recorded maintenance or replacement history would also provide valuable context for the vehicle’s condition.
