The most recent MOT test on 30 April 2025 resulted in a pass, but the accompanying advisories indicate a concerning downward trend in the vehicle's structural condition. While previous tests between 2021 and 2024 were relatively clean or limited to minor issues, the latest inspection reveals widespread corrosion affecting the rear coil springs, rear axle, and front sub-frame. This suggests that surface oxidation has progressed to a more systemic level, shifting the maintenance profile from routine wear and tear to potential structural degradation. The recorded mileage of 91,237 miles is notably low for a twenty year old vehicle, averaging approximately 4,562 miles per year. While low mileage generally implies less mechanical wear on the engine and drivetrain, it often correlates with periods of standing or short-distance urban journeys. Such usage patterns can exacerbate corrosion due to moisture retention and may lead to the degradation of rubber components and fluids that perish over time regardless of the distance travelled. Prospective buyers must pay close attention to the chassis and suspension components. The corrosion noted on the rear coil springs and axle is a critical point; during a test drive, listen for metallic clunks or knocks over uneven surfaces, which may indicate failing springs or worn suspension bushes. A physical inspection of the underbody is essential to determine if the sub-frame corrosion is superficial or if it has compromised the structural integrity of the mounting points. Given the age and the specific advisories, a professional underside inspection on a lift is strongly recommended to ensure the vehicle remains safe and viable for future MOT tests. Beyond the recorded corrosion, the low annual mileage necessitates checks for age-related deterioration. Inspect the tyre sidewalls for fine cracking or perishing, as rubber hardens over time even if the tread depth remains legal. Check the brake discs for heavy surface corrosion or binding calipers, which often occur when a vehicle sits idle for extended periods. Finally, verify the service history to ensure that engine oil and coolant have been changed based on time intervals rather than just mileage, as stagnant fluids can lead to internal engine sludge or cooling system failures.
