2005 Volvo S60 2.4L Diesel · SP05 WBT

A critical absence of official roadworthiness data defines this vehicle, with no MOT records available for over seventeen years. While the final entry on 28 March 2009 resulted in a pass without defects, the subsequent gap until the present date means there is no documented evidence of the vehicle's mechanical state or compliance with safety standards for the vast majority of its existence. The recorded mileage of 124,304 miles over twenty-one years averages approximately 5,919 miles per annum, which is notably low for a vehicle of this vintage. When reconciled with the extensive hiatus in testing, this usage pattern indicates the vehicle has spent significant periods in long-term storage. Such prolonged inactivity often leads to mechanical degradation that differs from standard wear and tear, specifically affecting components that rely on regular lubrication and movement. Given the likelihood of a multi-year lay-up, a physical inspection must prioritise the integrity of all rubber and polymer components. Check for perished suspension bushes, cracked tyre sidewalls, and brittle vacuum lines. During a test drive, listen for knocks or clunks over uneven surfaces, which would indicate failed bushings, and feel for any hesitation or unevenness in the steering, which can occur when steering rack seals dry out or fluids degrade during long periods of stasis. Attention should be directed toward the braking system and chassis integrity. Check for binding calipers or a spongy pedal feel, as brake pistons can seize and fluid can contaminate when left dormant. Inspect the underbody and wheel arches for corrosion, as vehicles stored in damp environments can suffer structural degradation. Any signs of oil misting or leaks from engine seals should be closely monitored, as gaskets often shrink and fail after extended periods of non-use.
