2016 Piaggio Vespa 0.1L Petrol · SP16 WDG

A clean, unbroken run of pass certificates from 2021 onwards sits at the centre of this Vespa's roadworthiness profile, with the most recent test on 27 August 2024 returning no recorded defects or advisories. Across the seven DVSA tests on file, only a single failure appears, dated 2 July 2021, where the vehicle was refused on a missing offside side-panel mounted direction indicator and an inoperative rear position lamp. Both items were minor body and lighting defects rather than structural, braking, or emissions concerns, and the subsequent pass just seven days later on 9 July 2021 indicates these were rectified promptly. The overall trajectory is therefore one of stable compliance with no chronic advisories relating to suspension, braking, exhaust integrity, or corrosion, which is the dominant mechanical story of this machine. Recorded mileage stands at 21,783 miles over an approximate ten-year span, equating to a very modest annual accumulation of around 2,178 miles. This is low usage for a scooter of this age, and the mileage progression between tests appears broadly consistent with light, predominantly short-journey use. Mechanically, low annual mileage on a Vespa of this vintage tends to place greater stress on the two-stroke or four-stroke powertrain through cold-start cycles and infrequent warm-up periods, while consumable wear on brake pads, tyres, and drive belts progresses more slowly than on a higher-mileage equivalent. The absence of long gaps between tests in the DVSA record suggests the vehicle has not been laid up for extended periods, which reduces the likelihood of seized brake calipers, perished fuel lines, or dried-out suspension linkages developing unseen. For a prospective buyer, the failure items from July 2021 are worth a brief physical check rather than a deep mechanical concern. Confirm that the offside side panel and its indicator assembly are present, correctly seated, and that the indicator functions reliably with the ignition on, paying particular attention to the connector and the bulb holder which can corrode on Vespa panels exposed to road spray. The rear position lamp should illuminate cleanly without flicker when the ignition is switched on, and the lens should be free of water ingress or clouding that could mask a future failure. These are inexpensive items, but their previous failure is the only blemish in an otherwise unrecorded test history. Beyond the recorded defects, attention should focus on the typical wear points of a low-mileage Vespa, even though none have yet been flagged. On a test ride or rolling inspection, listen for any clonking or knocking from the front suspension over uneven surfaces, which can indicate worn trailing-link or shock absorber bushes that MOT testing does not always detect at low speed. Check that both front and rear brake levers build firm pressure without sponginess, that the wheel runs true without bearing rumble when spun, and that the throttle returns cleanly to idle without sticking in the cable. Examine the underfloor and side panel seams for any bubbling paint or surface corrosion, as Vespa body panels can trap moisture. Finally, verify tyre condition directly, as a lightly used scooter may still be running aged rubber with reduced grip despite legal tread depth.
