2003 Volkswagen Passat Sport TDI 1.9L Diesel · UIJ 32

The most recent official DVSA MOT test for this 2003 Volkswagen Passat Sport TDI was conducted on 17 December 2021, at which the vehicle achieved a PASSED outcome with no defects, advisories, or failures recorded against it. While a clean pass is a reassuring data point, it is important to recognise that the official record provided is extremely sparse, containing only a single entry from late 2021. This means there is no longitudinal defect history to verify whether the vehicle has suffered recurring issues with items commonly problematic on this model, such as rear suspension bushes, coil springs, wishbone bearings, anti-roll bar drop links, or dual-mass flywheel concerns. The absence of a recorded test history from the intervening period to the present date should be queried with the seller, and any gap in MOT compliance warrants verification of the vehicle's road legal status and an independent pre-purchase inspection. The recorded mileage of 162,206 miles over approximately 23 years equates to an annualised usage of roughly 7,052 miles, which is broadly typical for a vehicle of this age and consistent with a mix of urban, commuter, and motorway driving rather than long-term standing or high-mileage commercial use. Given the model's working diesel platform nature, this mileage bracket suggests moderate wear across major drivetrain components, with the cambelt, water pump, and tensioner assemblies representing critical time-based service items regardless of recorded miles. A timing belt replacement on the 1.9 or 2.0 TDI engine is typically mandated every four to five years, meaning several replacement events would have been required across this vehicle's life; verification of the most recent belt change with accompanying invoices or a clearly stamped service book is essential, as a neglected timing belt on an interference diesel engine can precipitate catastrophic engine damage. Given the age of the vehicle and the sparse MOT history, the prospective buyer should conduct a thorough physical inspection prioritising age-related degradation rather than relying solely on the clean test record. Tyres on a 2003 vehicle should be scrutinised for sidewall perishing and cracking, as rubber compounds degrade with calendar age even if tread depth remains adequate, and any tyres over six years old should be replaced regardless of wear. The braking system warrants close examination for corrosion on the brake discs, particularly if the vehicle has been standing for extended periods, and calipers should be checked for binding pistons which manifest as uneven pad wear or pulling under braking. Fluid servicing should be verified including brake fluid, which is hygroscopic and degrades over time, and the diesel fuel system should be inspected for water ingress and filter condition. The 12-volt battery should be load tested, as batteries beyond five years of age are prone to failure particularly in vehicles with high parasitic drain from aftermarket alarms or infotainment retrofits. During a test drive, particular attention should be paid to the suspension, which on this generation of Passat is prone to rear transverse link and trailing arm bush failure, typically presenting as knocking or clonking over uneven surfaces and uneven rear tyre wear. The clutch should be evaluated for slipping under high load in higher gears and for juddering on take-off, with the dual-mass flywheel listening for rattle on idle and overrun. The steering should be checked for clonking at full lock and for play in the front wishbone rear bushes, a known Passat weak point. The diesel engine should be observed from cold start for excessive smoke, ticking from the injectors, and any hesitation or misfire, while a road test should confirm smooth power delivery without turbo lag, hesitation, or overboost. Exhaust smoke under acceleration or oil leaks around the cam belt area or sump should be noted, as should any evidence of coolant loss which could indicate head gasket or water pump concerns. Given the vehicle's age, a thorough inspection by a VW specialist or a pre-purchase inspection service is strongly recommended prior to commitment.
