2009 Ford Fiesta 1.4L Diesel · VB07 HDB

The most recent MOT test on the 2009 Ford Fiesta, conducted on 2025-10-15, resulted in a clean pass with only two advisories: an oil leak from the engine bay and an offside rear tyre nail. While the vehicle has passed all subsequent MOTs since, the recurring nature of the oil leaks—present in every test from 2020 onwards—suggests a persistent mechanical issue that, if left unaddressed, could escalate into a more serious failure. The presence of hydraulic leaks in the gearbox from 2020 also indicates potential wear in the hydraulic system, which, over time, may lead to reduced clutch or gearbox performance or even hydraulic failure. The offside rear tyre nail is a minor but critical advisory, as it risks compromising tyre integrity and could lead to a sudden blowout, particularly if the vehicle is driven at higher speeds. The front tyre wear advisories from 2024 indicate that the tyres are nearing their legal limits, with significant edge wear suggesting uneven or aggressive driving conditions or potential suspension misalignment. The vehicle’s recorded mileage of 60,129 miles at the time of assessment represents a relatively low annual usage rate of approximately 3,537 miles per year, which is unusually low for a 17-year-old car. Such low mileage often reflects periods of prolonged inactivity, which can exacerbate issues like standing corrosion, particularly in the brake systems, suspension components, and undercarriage. The absence of higher mileage accumulation in recent years may also mask wear that would typically be expected from regular use, but the persistent oil and hydraulic leaks suggest that the engine and transmission are being subjected to unnecessary stress, potentially accelerating component failure. It is also worth noting that low mileage can sometimes conceal issues such as fluid degradation, where brake fluid or transmission fluid may have sat for extended periods, leading to absorption of moisture and loss of effectiveness. For the prospective buyer, the most critical immediate actions should focus on the persistent oil and hydraulic leaks, as these are clear signs of failing seals or gaskets. Upon inspection, the engine bay and gearbox area should be thoroughly checked for oil or hydraulic fluid pooling, with particular attention to the valve cover gaskets, oil pan gasket, and transmission fluid cooler lines. Listen for any unusual engine noises, particularly during cold starts or when the engine is under load, as a leaking oil pan could lead to carbon buildup or overheating. For the hydraulic system, watch for reduced clutch engagement or difficulty shifting gears, which may indicate failing hydraulic lines or seals. A test drive should include acceleration and deceleration to assess for any hydraulic resistance or clutch slippage, as well as listening for clunking noises from the suspension, which could indicate worn suspension bushes or broken coil springs contributing to the tyre wear patterns observed. In addition to the mechanical concerns, the buyer should conduct a comprehensive physical inspection of the vehicle’s structural and cosmetic integrity, especially given the low mileage and potential standing periods. Check the brake discs for signs of corrosion or binding, particularly near the calipers, as prolonged standing can cause rust to form on the discs and cause them to seize. Inspect the tyres for sidewall perishing or cracking, which can occur even with low mileage if the vehicle has been stored in harsh conditions or without proper maintenance. Verify the condition of the 12V battery, as low usage rates can lead to a drained or weakened battery, and test the electrical systems, including the headlamp aim, which failed in the 2020 MOT. Finally, ensure that all fluids—oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and coolant—are topped up to manufacturer specifications and that there are no visible leaks from these reservoirs. Given the age of the vehicle, it is also advisable to consult a service history to confirm that routine maintenance such as oil changes and filter replacements have been carried out, as the oil and hydraulic leaks may be linked to neglect in these areas. If possible, arrange for a professional inspection to assess the extent of the seal failures and recommend any necessary repairs or fluid replacements.
