2018 Vauxhall Astra 1.4L Petrol · YE68 MSF

The Vauxhall Astra presents a clean and highly consistent DVSA MOT history, with the most recent test on 26 August 2026 returning a pass and no defects or advisories recorded. The four preceding annual tests from 2022 through 2025 all resulted in straightforward passes with no advisories noted, indicating a stable and well-maintained maintenance trend over the vehicle's testing lifetime. The absence of any recurring advisories relating to suspension components, braking systems, tyres, or corrosion suggests the vehicle has been conscientiously presented for testing, although it is worth remembering that a clean MOT record does not preclude underlying wear that may not yet have reached failure thresholds. With 32,514 miles recorded over approximately eight years, this Astra has covered a notably modest annual average of around 4,064 miles, which is considerably below the typical mileage for a vehicle of its age. Such low usage carries specific mechanical implications: extended periods of standing can promote corrosion on brake discs leading to binding calipers, premature ageing of the 12V battery due to repeated shallow discharge cycles, and the degradation of rubber components including tyres where sidewall perishing and cracking can develop regardless of tread depth. Fluid systems including brake fluid, coolant, and engine oil are also subject to time-based degradation, with calendar-aged brake fluid in particular becoming hygroscopic and reducing braking effectiveness. Given the clean MOT record, a prospective buyer should concentrate on physical and condition-based inspections rather than specific advisories. The tyres warrant close scrutiny for age-related sidewall cracking, visible DOT date codes, and uneven wear patterns, while the brake discs should be examined for surface rust and any signs of lipping or warping that could produce shudder under braking. A test drive should include firm progressive braking from moderate speed to confirm straight-line stability and absence of pulling, as well as listening for any suspension clonks or knocking over uneven surfaces that might indicate worn anti-roll bar bushes, drop links, or top mounts. Cold starting behaviour, any irregular idling, or hesitation under load should also be noted given that low-mileage vehicles can suffer from infrequent-use issues such as oil seal drying or fouled spark plugs. Finally, verification of the documented service history is essential for a vehicle of this age, with particular attention to the timing belt or chain replacement interval relevant to the specific engine variant, which on Astra petrol and diesel units is typically due between 80,000 and 100,000 miles or by a calendar age threshold. The battery state of health should be tested under load, and the condition of the coolant and brake fluid checked for colour, clarity, and any evidence of neglect. A diagnostic scan for stored fault codes is advisable even with a clean MOT, as electronic systems are not routinely inspected during testing. With low mileage, even gentle use over eight years places this Astra at a stage where proactive replacement of ageing rubber components, fluids, and the auxiliary battery would represent sound preventative expenditure to maintain long-term reliability.
