2004 Toyota MR2 1.8L Petrol · MM04 MPX

This 2004 Toyota MR2 successfully passed its most recent MOT test in December 2025 at 173,058 miles, maintaining a continuous test streak, though the overall maintenance trend points towards increasing mechanical wear. Reviewing the historical data reveals a recurring pattern of advisories relating to suspension degradation, braking system components, and corrosion that have accumulated over successive annual tests. While the vehicle has consistently avoided outright test failures, the cluster of advisories on the most recent certificate indicates that several major mechanical assemblies are reaching the end of their operational service life and will demand immediate remedial attention from the next owner. The recorded mileage of 173,058 miles on a twenty-two-year-old sports car equates to an average annual usage of roughly 7,866 miles, which is entirely typical for a vehicle of this age and suggests regular, steady utilization rather than prolonged storage or extreme fleet duties. This mileage accumulation rate means that high-stress drivetrain components, including the mid-mounted engine, manual gearbox, and clutch assembly, have experienced substantial operational cycles. Prospective buyers must verify that the service history matches this mileage footprint, ensuring that major engine overhauls, cooling system refreshes, and oil change intervals have been rigorously adhered to throughout its high-mileage lifespan. On the road test and during a static inspection, specific attention must be paid to the braking system and suspension components highlighted in the recent test records. The advisory regarding the parking brake efficiency only just meeting requirements, combined with worn, pitted, or scored rear brake discs noted across multiple years, suggests that the rear calipers, cables, or friction materials require urgent overhaul or replacement, which you may notice as a weak handbrake hold or reduced stopping bite. Furthermore, the slightly noisy offside front wheel bearing will likely produce a characteristic humming or droning noise that intensifies with vehicle speed, while the slight play in the nearside front anti-roll bar ball joint and the history of corroded front coil springs can manifest as knocks, clunks, or a loose sensation over uneven road surfaces. Buyers should also thoroughly check the tyres for age-related degradation, given the recurring advisories for cracking and perishing rubber on the sidewalls, which can compromise grip even if the tread depth appears legal. The noted corrosion on the rear subframe and front coil springs warrants a careful inspection underneath the vehicle with a torch to differentiate between harmless surface scale and structural rust that could weaken the chassis mounting points. Finally, listen closely for any play in the steering, building on previous advisories for steering rack inner joints, and ensure that all electrical systems and fluid levels are thoroughly vetted to secure a reliable ownership experience from this classic mid-engined roadster.
