2002 Land Rover Discovery 2.5L Diesel · LN52 AFX

The vehicle’s most recent MOT on 2023-01-24 at 147,314 miles resulted in a failure, though no defects were recorded. This contrasts with the prior three consecutive passes between 2020-01-30 and 2022-01-20, which also showed no defects. The lack of recorded issues in these tests suggests either minimal mechanical degradation or incomplete inspection. However, the 2023 failure—over three years after the last pass—indicates a potential decline in compliance, though the absence of specific faults limits definitive conclusions. Maintenance trends appear unstable, with no clear pattern of worsening or improvement. The mileage progression from 144,437 miles in 2020 to 147,314 miles in 2023 reflects an annual average of approximately 1,000 miles, significantly below the vehicle’s typical 6,138-mile annual rate. This low usage could imply prolonged periods of inactivity, increasing risks of component corrosion, fluid degradation, and rubber part failure. The sparse MOT record, with only four tests over six years, offers limited insight into long-term maintenance practices. Notably, the 2021 test recorded both a pass and a fail on the same day at identical mileage, raising questions about procedural consistency or retesting after repairs. A buyer should prioritize inspecting the suspension system for worn bushes or coil springs, common wear points in aging 4x4s, and check for binding calipers or uneven brake disc wear, which may not trigger immediate MOT failures. Structural corrosion, particularly in the chassis or underbody, warrants scrutiny due to the vehicle’s age and low mileage, which can exacerbate rust. The 2023 failure, though unexplained, underscores the need for a thorough pre-purchase inspection to verify compliance with safety standards and identify latent mechanical issues not captured in the MOT history.
